History
Founded in 1917 by the VIIth Nizam of Hyderabad, Nawwab
Mir Osman Ali Khan, Osmania University is the seventh
oldest institution of higher learning in India, the third
oldest in southern India and the first to be established
in the erstwhile princely State of Hyderabad. Throughout
its existence of almost nine decades, it has shown remarkable
progress and sustained an integrated development of all
faculties. It has made significant contribution to the
academic, social and economic development of not only
the region but to the nation as a whole. Its alumni have
distinguished themselves nationally and internationally
in various spheres of life and are spread far and wide
around the world. Reputation
& offerings
With a sprawling campus of nearly 1600 acres (6 km²)
and buildings of majestic beauty and architectural splendor,
Osmania University is perhaps the symbol of the largest
higher education system in the Country. With its strong
reputation, the University has always attracted students
from all acorss the nation as well as from various other
countries. It is the home to nearly 300,000 students
pursuing their higher studies in its Campus, Constituent,
affiliated Colleges and District Centres. Its faculty
and staff number nearly 5000. It is a multi-faculty
and multidisciplinary university, offering rich and
varied courses in the fields of Humanities, Arts, Sciences,
Social Sciences, Law, Engineering,Medicine, Technology,
Commerce and Business Management, Information Technology
and Oriental Languages. The University’s strategic
planning, teaching-and-learning policies and research
direction have always emphasized respect for the concerns
of the society and the need to address the issues that
challenge it.
The Department of Business Management, Osmania University
has been offering an MBA program since 1964. This program
has been consistently ranked one of the best MBA programs
in India. Only 60 students from over 100,000 applicants
make it into this MBA program through a competitive
exam.
The Department of Geography is the oldest and largest
geography department in south India. Established in
1942, it has a substantial infrastructure with high-tech
labs for geography and geoinformatics, which include
the Image Processing lab, Photogrammetry lab and the
Geoinformatics lab. It is matchless in terms of infrastructure
among the geography departments in India.It has a hundred
computer systems spead over five labs, ARC INFO software
- multiple single user and multiple user licences, ERDAS
Imagine and LIECA photogrammetry suite - again multiple
user licences, Map info and other softwares, an automated
office and networked labs. It also has some of India's
well-known geographers on its faculty. It offers masters
and doctorate degrees in both geography and geoinformatics.
Prof. Manzoor Alam, the department head, gave the initial
boost to this department by getting substantial funding
from the University Grants Commission for various facets
of development of this department. Prof. Kalpana Markandey
gave the department a second boost, after helping to
bring a grant of one crore from the Department of Science
and Technology and the University Grants Commission
for the development of labs and new courses.
The College of Engineering (OUCE), established in 1929,
offers B.E, M.E and Ph.D programs in various streams.
It is an autonomous college and arguably the best engineering
college in Andhra Pradesh. An affiliation with the IIT
is suggested due to its achievements and excellent academic
pursuits.
In the year 2001, Osmania University had the distinction
of being awarded the five-star status by the National
Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) of the University
Grants Commission, part of the Government of India.
